How the Paducah Innovation Hub is Building the Workforce of Tomorrow
October 21, 2024
“What do you want to be when you grow up?” It’s a question that every student hears from a young age, and for the students in the Paducah region, the answer may be found at the Paducah Innovation Hub. This unique, state-of-the-art facility is helping shape the future workforce by offering students from kindergarten through high school the opportunity to explore a wide range of career paths. But the HUB is far more than just a training facility—it's an immersive environment where students can take their curiosity and turn it into tangible, marketable skills.
The Paducah Innovation Hub is part of Greater Paducah’s commitment to building a 21st-century workforce. This innovative center is a key part of the region’s economic development strategy, ensuring that local businesses have access to a highly skilled and well-trained labor force. Whether it's healthcare, welding, information technology, or engineering, the HUB is equipping our young residents with the skills they need to succeed—and thrive—in the modern economy.
Hands-On Learning with a Purpose
With nearly 700 students enrolled in programs ranging from auto technology to construction and health sciences, the Paducah Innovation Hub is bursting with opportunity. One of the most unique aspects of the HUB is its fully immersive learning environment. Imagine students designing a product in the engineering lab, then heading next door to the maker space to bring that product to life. This hands-on approach means that students aren’t just learning concepts—they’re applying them in real-world scenarios.
Internships: Preparing Students for Real-World Success
One of the most exciting features of the Paducah Innovation Hub is its work-based learning program. As high school students progress through their chosen pathways, many are placed in internships with local businesses, giving them invaluable on-the-job training.
Take Braelynn Hutcherson, a senior at Paducah Tilghman High School. She finished the Hub’s two-year welding pathway in the spring of 2024. She’s now pursuing an internship with a local company and after graduation, she plans to continue her career as a welder. There are many students like Braelynn, whether they’re learning to weld on barges or gaining hands-on healthcare experience at local hospitals, these internships ensure that students graduate ready to jump into fulfilling careers.
Education and Economic Development
At Greater Paducah Economic Development, we understand the critical role that education plays in fostering long-term economic growth. Without a skilled and educated workforce, businesses will struggle to find the talent they need, and economic progress can stagnate. That's why investing in education, particularly in training and STEM fields, is one of our top priorities.
The Paducah Innovation Hub is a testament to our commitment. Since the University of Kentucky College of Engineering opened its Paducah campus over 25 years ago, our region has continued to invest in educational initiatives that prepare students for careers in science, technology, and skilled trades. The HUB is one of the community’s latest efforts to provide pathways to high-paying jobs for our youth.
In fact, the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis has highlighted the Paducah Innovation Hub as a “best practice” for economic equity, recognizing its role in reversing economic poverty by preparing students for high-skill, high-wage jobs.
