Business Spotlight: Rusted Roots Boutique
Southern-infused styles meet urban industrial fashions at Rusted Roots Boutique, a shop owned by Carlisle County native, Megan Koch.
Megan Koch opened Rusted Roots Boutique to bring West Coast fashions with a Southern spin to Western Kentucky. Her store carries a variety of fashions for women of all shapes and sizes. While Megan has a range of styles and trends embedded in her merchandise, it is evident that each piece is top-quality and made with lasting materials.
Inspired by her entrepreneurial family, Megan thought about a career change from the medical field to opening her own business.
“It all started with a bangle-making class at The Dirt Road! The bracelets were trendy at the time, so I decided I could learn to make them and sell a few. It took off like crazy!” says Megan Koch, owner and founder of Rusted Roots Boutique.
Still working a 40-hour week at her day job, Megan researched the best business techniques and ideas in her spare time after work and on the weekends until her plans became a reality.
“I’ve always wanted to be my own boss. I love the idea of being able to set my own schedule in my career. I would have never thought that career would be clothes, to be honest, but I guess most girls have a passion for clothes. It just kind of made sense.”
Megan opened her first store in Bardwell, Kentucky five years ago in her family’s farm office. Her Bardwell store was such a success that she thought about adding another location in a larger market, but she wanted to stay close to home. That’s when she found the perfect location in Paducah and opened March 22nd of this year.
“I had been rolling around the idea of opening a store in Paducah and had been offered other locations in the past, but it just wasn’t the right timing. I tend to go on gut instinct in almost everything I do, and it usually pays off. I knew that I had to choose a location that sat right with me based on instinct and vision. I set up a booth at Barbecue on the River last year and Matt Moore, with Wildcat Real Estate LLC, stopped by. He looked around for a while and then asked if I would be interested in looking at a space he had available. Something about the space just felt right and I couldn’t have picked a better location for the Rusted Roots brand!”
Striving to be unique in an ever-changing market, Megan ensures that every customer who enters her store gets the best customer service experience. She trains her staff to always be kind, honest, and to anticipate the customer’s needs. Rusted Roots is working on a program to create a custom customer profile for new and repeat customers that will store their favorite styles and colors. Once launched, customers will be able to schedule one on one appointments with their favorite staff member or have a selection of specifically curated items pulled for them to streamline their shopping experience.
“I want every customer to walk out of my store in love with their purchase. That’s why we go the extra mile to ensure every customer is matched with their perfect fit and style.”
It was evident that Megan enjoys her customers. During our visit, she greeted each and every one of them, most by name.
Megan is so passionate about stocking only the best quality merchandise in her stores that she flew to L.A. before opening her Paducah location to purchase straight from the source. She flies to L.A. twice a year to purchase products for both of her stores bringing the West Coast styles to Paducah.
“Because we only purchase limited quantities of each style once the item is gone, it’s gone. I choose great quality items that can easily be incorporated into any wardrobe and worn for multiple seasons. I’m not one to go with the crowd and wanted to bring new and unique styles to the people of Paducah.”
